Monroe County Clerk responds to federal passport changes

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Secretary of State Marco Rubio suspended all passport applications seeking to change a sex marker and all applications requesting an “X” sex marker.

“As a result of one of the president’s executive orders, where he has declared that there are only two genders, there will be changes to any current pending passport applications…those passport applications, even though you gave your money to the government in good faith, and gave them your original documents, are probably going to get sent back to you and rejected simply because of this executive order,” Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo said.

Wednesday afternoon, Romeo and other local leadership addressed individuals who may be impacted by changes from the Trump Administration. Romeo’s office said that although they do not know the full implications of the policy changes, they do believe that such applications are likely to be rejected.

“This is really a crucial issue for us in the trans community as we face uncertainties, doubt, fear, scrutiny and political ideologies that seek to turn us into demonized political ideas,” said Luca Justum with the Rochester Rainbow Union. “Government documents aside, we are trans, we have always been trans, we will continue to be trans.”

Jamie Romeo declared the County Office Building, Brighton Town Hall, and the county and town clerk’s offices, as safe spaces for individuals impacted by the policy changes to learn the best next steps to take.
