Monroe County Leaders Urge Residents to Get REAL ID Before Next Month

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — New Yorkers have one month before they have to get a REAL ID if they wish to travel by plane in the future.

Starting May 7, 2025, you will not be able to board a domestic flight with a standard driver’s license. You would need a REAL ID, an Enhanced Driver’s License, or a passport. The enhanced ID can also help residents return to the US by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, and some areas in the Caribbean.

The deadline has been postponed multiple times prior to this, but officials say this deadline is permanently set in stone.

“We’ve done a number of these press conferences,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello says. “But what makes this one different is that its real. The implementation of REAL ID is coming, and it’s coming next month.”

Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo and County Executive Adam Bello are urging residents to get these upgrades to avoid disruptions to their travel plans. Those looking to upgrade their IDs can book an appointment by clicking here. The DMV has resources online on what to bring before your appointment.

“Just add a new checkbox to your packing list,” says Romeo. “Make sure you have everything you need, and make sure you bring the right type of ID. You bring you drivers license with you everywhere you go, you just have to make sure you have that flag or star.”

The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005, which establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses, permits, and ID cards.
