MCCO COVID-19 Update: Adding or Removing a Firearm from a Pistol Permit Now Available by U.S. Mail

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 15, 2020

***Media Release*** Adding or Removing a Firearm from a Pistol Permit Now Available by U.S. Mail through Clerk’s Office

April 15, 2020 (Rochester, NY) Today, Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo announced the beginning of a limited number of mail-in pistol permit transactions that are now available, including adding or removing firearms from permits and address changes. After making significant software updates to the office’s database systems, the County Clerk’s Office can now safely and securely provide these services to Monroe County pistol permit holders.

“It is important when we are amending processes with potential legal ramifications for our customers that we get it right the first time,” Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo stated. “Our office is responsible for accepting and maintaining pistol permit applications and files, however, the judges of the 7th Judicial District determine the approval or suspension of those permits. With these new mail-in protocols, the Clerk’s Office continues our commitment to meet the needs of our residents during this unprecedented time.”

Starting on April 14th, the Monroe County Clerks Office can now accept and process amendments to existing pistol permits. These will include the adding or removal of firearms or address changes. New permit applications cannot be accepted at this time.

“With the heavier reliance on the U.S. Mail to keep many of these functions moving, I do want to thank all of the letter carriers and staff of the United States Postal Service, and the many individuals delivering documents and packages throughout the community. So many important public service functions are able to continue because U.S. Postal Service continues to operate, and we are grateful.”

Information about the new U.S. Mail transactions is available on the Monroe County Clerk’s COVID19 Updates webpage. Application packets can be downloaded, or a copy can be mailed out upon request made via (585) 753-1642 or mcpistols@monroecounty.gov.
